In a surprising move, Warner Bros. has announced that the Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will be available for digital purchase on October 29th, with a physical release on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K slated for December 17th. This swift home release comes on the heels of the film's underwhelming performance at the box office, with domestic totals reaching only $65 million and global numbers falling short of expectations.
The film's poor reception is a significant blow to Warner Bros., which invested a substantial $200 million in production and $100 million in marketing. The studio had hoped to replicate the success of the original Joker film, but instead, the sequel's lackluster performance has resulted in a substantial loss.
The rapid home release may be an attempt by Warner Bros. to cut its losses and move on to more promising projects. This move may also indicate a shift in the studio's strategy, prioritizing digital releases over theatrical runs.
