Nintendo Switch 2 Mockup Revealed at CES, Hinting at Design Changes

Nintendo may not have an official presence at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), but the company's next-generation console, the Switch 2, has seemingly stolen the spotlight. Accessory-maker Genki has brought a 3D-printed mockup of the Switch 2 to the event, providing a first-hand look at the potential design changes and features of the highly anticipated console.

Based on the mockup, the Switch 2 appears to be wider than its predecessor, with slightly larger Joy-Con controllers that seem more comfortable to hold. In comparison to the Steam Deck OLED, the Switch 2 mockup feels noticeably smaller, largely due to the less pronounced and ergonomic design of the Joy-Cons. The mockup's size is closer to Valve's handheld console than the original Switch.

As previously rumored, the Switch 2's Joy-Cons will attach to the console via magnets instead of a sliding rail, according to Genki co-founder and CEO Eddie Tsai. To detach a Joy-Con from the Switch 2, users will need to press a large button at the top of the back side of each controller, which will release the magnets. Tsai noted that the Joy-Cons feel secure for regular use and can be detached with ease using the release button.

Furthermore, Tsai revealed that the Joy-Cons may offer mouse-like functionality through an optical sensor housed within the mounting channel. This feature is reminiscent of Lenovo's Legion Go handheld. Although Tsai declined to share the source of his information, the mockup provides a tangible look at the Switch 2's potential design and features.

The Switch 2 mockup is not the first leak or rumor surrounding the console. In December, YouTube channel SwitchUp posted a video showcasing a 3D-printed, non-functional Switch 2 mockup provided by a Chinese case manufacturer. The mockup revealed a few potential changes, including a new USB-C port on the top of the device and a mysterious new square button under the Home button on the right Joy-Con.

Days later, accessories-maker Dbrand announced its "Killswitch 2" case, which was designed based on "actual dimensions" from a "3D scan of the real hardware." Dbrand's CEO Adam Ijaz also confirmed that the console's Joy-Cons are magnetically attached. The company's imagery showed the new square button with a "C" printed on it, although Ijaz was unsure of its purpose.

With Nintendo promising to announce the Switch's successor before April 2025, the recent wave of leaks and rumors suggests that the official reveal may be imminent. Until then, the Genki mockup provides a tangible glimpse into the potential design and features of the Switch 2.

As the gaming industry eagerly awaits the official announcement of the Switch 2, one thing is certain – the next-generation console will bring significant changes to the gaming landscape. With its potential design changes and features, the Switch 2 is poised to revolutionize the handheld gaming experience.
