Top 10 African Countries Leading in Drone Purchases from 1980 to 2024

The proliferation of drones has transformed modern warfare, and Africa is no exception. A new report by Military Africa's Drone Databook has revealed the top 10 African countries leading in drone purchases from 1980 to 2024. Egypt, Morocco, and Nigeria top the list, with a cumulative total of 1,534 units procured across 31 African countries.

The report highlights the growing impact of drones on modern warfare, with the number of countries using armed UAVs quadrupling in the past decade. In Africa, drones have become vital in modern conflicts, aiding surveillance, strikes, and logistics. In the Sahel region, where groups like Boko Haram and ISIS affiliates operate, drones provide real-time aerial imagery, enabling governments to track militants and secure strategic areas.

However, the effectiveness of drones has been questioned due to the loss of innocent lives resulting from UAV strikes. Despite this, several African countries are advancing security and self-reliance by boosting local production of drones. The Drone Databook provides an overview of Africa's UAV market from 1980 to 2024, with 180+ equipment entries and detailed procurement data.

The report classifies drones into three categories based on their maximum take-off weight: Class I (<150 kg) for reconnaissance and surveillance, Class II (150-600 kg) for tactical UAVs, and Class III (>600 kg) for fixed- and rotary-wing UAVs capable of carrying various weapons or used for intelligence gathering. According to the report, Class II drones lead procurement, representing nearly 40% of all units.

Egypt stands out as the top buyer with 267 drones, followed by Morocco and Nigeria. This dominance might be linked to their strategic locations, significant security challenges, and relatively larger defense budgets. The report's findings signify a steady rise in drone adoption across the continent, with implications for modern warfare and regional security.

The Drone Databook's comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights into the African drone market, highlighting the growing importance of UAVs in modern conflict zones. As the use of drones continues to evolve, it will be essential to monitor their impact on regional security and stability.
