TikTok is taking a significant step towards promoting digital wellness among its teenage users by introducing a new "wind down" feature. The feature, designed to encourage teens to limit their app use at night, will interrupt their feed with a full-screen reminder after 10 PM, accompanied by calming music to help them relax and be mindful of the time.
The wind down feature, which will initially be available to users under 16, is part of TikTok's efforts to prioritize the well-being of its young users. If teens ignore the first reminder, they will be displayed another reminder that's harder to dismiss. The feature is expected to be expanded in the coming weeks, with the incorporation of meditation exercises into the reminder.
In addition to the wind down feature, TikTok is also updating its Family Pairing feature, which allows parents to put restrictions on their child's account. The new Time Away feature will enable parents or caregivers to prevent their child from accessing TikTok during specific times, as well as set a recurring schedule. Furthermore, parents will be able to see who their teen is following, who follows them, and which accounts their child has blocked.
TikTok's move comes as lawmakers and regulators increasingly focus on online child safety. Earlier this month, Utah became the first state to pass a law requiring app store operators to verify users' ages when downloading an app. Other state laws have emerged that would block children from accessing social media, although many have been blocked by courts.
TikTok is also working to prevent children under 13 from using the app, partnering with telecom company Telefonica to use age information from phone providers to confirm users' ages. This effort is in line with Google's recent announcement to use machine learning to estimate users' ages.
The introduction of the wind down feature and updates to Family Pairing demonstrate TikTok's commitment to promoting responsible social media use among its young users. As the platform continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these features impact user behavior and contribute to a safer online environment for teenagers.
In the broader context, TikTok's move highlights the growing importance of digital wellness and online child safety in the tech industry. As social media platforms face increasing scrutiny from lawmakers and regulators, it is likely that we will see more features and initiatives aimed at promoting responsible social media use and protecting young users.
