Humane, the San Francisco-based gadget maker, has unveiled CosmOS, an ambitious operating system that promises to transform the way we interact with our devices. This move comes on the heels of lackluster sales and reviews of its Ai Pin, a dedicated AI device that was initially priced at $700 but has since been discounted to $500.
Despite the challenges faced by its flagship product, Humane remains committed to its vision of creating a world where dedicated AI devices are an integral part of our daily lives. CosmOS, which is based on the operating system that powers the Ai Pin, is designed to seamlessly coordinate various AI models, data sets, services, and device capabilities to deliver a fluid, intuitive experience.
In a slick demo video, Humane showcased CosmOS running on a range of devices, including a car's entertainment system, a smart speaker, a TV, and an Android phone. The operating system is capable of understanding complex queries and interacting with other apps and services on the user's behalf, much like Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple's Siri, but with AI agent-like capabilities.
The demo video highlighted several use-case examples, including asking CosmOS to turn up the heat at home, recommending takeout restaurants, providing recipes, and answering sports-related questions. While the video was impressive, it's worth noting that some of the devices used in the demo, such as the car's steering wheel and smart speaker, were blurred out, suggesting that the functionality may not be available just yet.
Humane claims that third-party developers will be able to build integrations between CosmOS and their "agents, data, and services." However, the demo video felt more like a sales pitch, raising questions about whether the company is seeking to attract potential acquirers who could repurpose its software in their own products.
It's unclear what the future holds for Humane, but the company's ambitious vision and significant funding of over $230 million suggest that it's not giving up just yet. As the tech industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how CosmOS develops and whether it can overcome the challenges faced by its predecessor, the Ai Pin.
One thing is certain – if Humane can deliver on its promises, CosmOS has the potential to greatly improve the way we interact with our devices, making it a game-changer in the world of artificial intelligence and beyond.
