Threads Rolls Out Redesign, Adds Custom Feed Features to Counter Bluesky's Rise

Instagram's Threads is rolling out a significant redesign, keeping users' feeds visible on the home screen, as announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Wednesday. The update, which starts with Android users and will soon be available on iOS, allows for quick swiping between different feeds, similar to the experience on X.

The redesign aims to simplify navigation within the app, making it easier for users to access their preferred feeds. This change builds upon recent updates, including the option to set a custom feed as default, which was a long-standing user request since Threads' launch last year.

In addition to the redesign, Threads has also introduced custom feeds, enabling users to curate content around specific topics or user profiles. Furthermore, the app will now surface more content from followed users in the "For You" algorithmic feed, addressing user complaints about seeing too much content from unknown profiles.

Threads is also working on a feature similar to Bluesky's "Starter Packs," which provides curated lists of recommended users for new users to follow. This move is seen as a response to the growing popularity of Bluesky, a decentralized X competitor that has surpassed 20 million users and is increasingly seen as a threat by Meta.

As many X users migrate to Bluesky, Meta is moving quickly to update Threads and appease its user base. The social network is actively responding to user feedback, aiming to retain users and prevent further migration to Bluesky, which is rapidly catching up with Threads in terms of daily active users.

The updates come at a critical time for Meta, as the company faces increasing competition from Bluesky and other decentralized social media platforms. By introducing features that cater to user demands, Threads hopes to maintain its user base and remain a dominant player in the social media landscape.

As the social media landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Threads and Bluesky compete for user attention. With Meta's resources and Threads' updated features, the battle for social media supremacy is far from over.
