Elon Musk's social media platform X was inaccessible for thousands of users on Monday morning, with the billionaire entrepreneur attributing the outage to a "massive cyberattack". The platform experienced intermittent outages throughout the day, with users reporting issues as early as 5:30 a.m. ET and continuing past 1:30 p.m. ET.
According to Downdetector, a website that tracks users' reports of online outages, X went down for some users around 5:30 a.m. ET, with more than 20,000 users reporting outages. Although the issues seemed to have resolved after about an hour, the outages returned around 9:30 a.m. ET, with more than 40,000 users reporting issues. Despite some users being able to access X intermittently, the issues persisted throughout the day.
Musk took to X to address the issue, stating that the platform was facing a "massive cyberattack" and that his team was working to trace the source of the attack. "There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against 𝕏. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing …" he wrote.
While Musk's claims have not been independently verified, it's not unfounded to believe that his platform would be vulnerable to cyberattacks. Musk has become increasingly prominent and controversial in recent times, particularly under President Donald Trump's second administration. His personal involvement in leading his team, dubbed "DOGE", through haphazard cuts to government funding, jobs, and international aid programs has drawn criticism.
Tesla stores have also been subject to protests over Musk's outsized, unelected role in the government, with the stock of Musk's car company dropping as a result. This increased scrutiny has likely made X a more attractive target for cyberattacks.
The outage has caused frustration among users, with one user lamenting on Downdetector, "on day 1 of the NFL free agency!? ELON Fix this." The incident serves as a reminder that even the largest and most prominent platforms can be vulnerable to cyberattacks, and that users must remain vigilant in protecting their online presence.
The incident also raises questions about the security measures in place to protect X and its users. As the platform continues to grow in popularity, it's essential that Musk and his team prioritize cybersecurity to prevent such outages in the future.
In the meantime, users are advised to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to protect their accounts. As the investigation into the cyberattack continues, it's likely that more information will come to light about the nature and scope of the attack.
