Thailand has officially launched its e-visa application system for citizens of nine African countries, effective January 1, 2025. This move aims to simplify the visa application process, making it more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly for African travelers.

The eligible African countries include the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Republic of Cameroon, Republic of Ghana, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, and Republic of Chad. Applicants from these countries can now submit their visa applications online via the Royal Thai Embassy's official website.

Thailand offers various visa options based on the purpose of travel, including Tourist Visas, Special Tourist Visas (STV), Transit Visas, Non-Immigrant Visas, and Diplomatic and Official Visas. These visas are available for both single and multiple entries, depending on specific conditions. The e-Visa system helps travelers determine the right visa type for their stay.

To apply, applicants must provide evidence of their presence in the approved countries and submit their visa applications 4 to 6 weeks before their planned travel date. The embassy advises that all travel booking confirmations, including return flight details, must be provided upon submission of the visa application. Visa applications are usually processed within five working days upon receipt, although processing times may be longer in certain cases.

This development is part of Thailand's efforts to strengthen ties with Africa, as seen in the "Look West Policy" launched in the early 2010s. The 2013 Thai-Africa Initiative broadened engagement, and trade between Thailand and Kenya reached $256.16 million in 2023. Sudan is also a key partner, particularly in education and trade, with Thailand-Sudan trade totaling $23.05 million in 2023.

The e-Visa system is expected to boost tourism and economic relations between Thailand and Africa. This move is seen as a significant step forward in deepening economic ties and promoting cultural exchange between the two regions.
