Tesla, once hailed as a beacon of innovation and electrification, is facing a brand crisis as Elon Musk's political alignments and controversies take a toll on sales and reputation. The company's first-quarter deliveries have fallen significantly, with only 336,681 vehicles delivered, down from 495,570 in Q4 2024 and 386,810 in the first quarter of last year.
The decline in sales can be attributed to Musk's increasing involvement in politics, particularly his alignment with President Trump and activities within the federal government. This has led to a loss of the brand's progressive luster, with many would-be buyers turning away from Tesla. According to Sean Tucker, lead editor at Kelley Blue Book, "They have a certain significant public image problem that's really something we haven't seen before in this industry."
Tesla's stock price has also taken a hit, losing about half its value since December. Protests have erupted outside Tesla showrooms, dealerships, and charging stations, with some turning violent. Foreign leaders are calling for boycotts, and sales in Europe have dropped significantly. In Germany, for example, Tesla sales were down 76% in February 2025, with only 1,429 sales for the month.
Musk's attempts to shift the focus to Tesla's AI capabilities and autonomous vehicle ambitions have done little to stem the tide. His promise to produce 5,000 Optimus robots this year and his vision for a "high-speed consumer electronics line" that can produce a car in under five seconds have been met with skepticism. Even one of Tesla's most ardent bulls, Dan Ives, has urged Musk to focus less on politics and more on his business "or else unfortunately darker times are ahead for Tesla."
The controversy surrounding Musk's political leanings has also led to a shift in customer demographics. While Republicans have increased their likelihood of purchasing a Tesla, Democrats have turned away from the brand. A study found that Republicans' likelihood to purchase a Tesla moved up from 7% before Musk's Trump endorsement to 10.2% after.
Meanwhile, Tesla's competitors are capitalizing on the brand's struggles. BYD, a Chinese automaker, has announced significant breakthroughs in charging technology, claiming its new cars can be charged in just five minutes. BYD has also surpassed Tesla in revenue, reporting $107 billion in 2024 compared to Tesla's $97.7 billion.
Tesla's aging lineup and recalls have also contributed to the brand's decline. The Cybertruck, once hailed as a game-changer, has been plagued by recalls, with eight issued since its launch in November 2023. The latest recall affected 46,000 Cybertrucks due to an exterior steel trim panel that can peel off.
As Tesla struggles to regain its footing, one thing is clear: the brand's reputation and sales have taken a significant hit due to Musk's political activities and controversies. Whether Tesla can recover from this crisis remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the brand's progressive image has been irreparably damaged.
