Tesla, the pioneering electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has taken an unexpected step by offering discounts of up to $2,600 on its highly publicized Cybertruck. This move has raised eyebrows, as the company simultaneously claims the Cybertruck is "America's bestselling electric pickup truck in 2024." The unusual combination of boasts and price cuts has sparked questions about the truck's demand and its position in an increasingly crowded EV market.
The discounts, which appear on Tesla's inventory webpage, vary depending on the configuration of the Cybertruck. Brand new trucks can be had for $1,600 off, while slightly used demo versions are discounted by up to $2,600. This is the first time Tesla has offered such significant price reductions on the Cybertruck, which has been a polarizing figure in the automotive world due to its futuristic design and Elon Musk's controversial politics.
The EV market has experienced a surge in options recently, with established players like Chevy and Hyundai, as well as newcomers like Rivian and Lucid, offering a range of electric trucks. The Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Hummer and Sierra EVs, and Rivian R1T are just a few examples of the growing competition. Despite this, Tesla asserts that the Cybertruck outsells all of these alternatives, although the company doesn't provide specific sales numbers for the model.
Tesla's claim is difficult to verify, as the company lumps Cybertruck sales in with those of its "other models," such as the Model S, Model X, and Tesla Semi. In contrast, Ford reports its sales numbers transparently, revealing that it sold 33,510 F-150 Lightnings in 2024. Estimates suggest Tesla may have sold around 40,000 Cybertrucks, but the lack of concrete data makes it challenging to confirm the company's assertion.
The discounts themselves are a strong indicator of weakening demand for the Cybertruck. Manufacturers typically reduce prices when they have an overabundance of inventory. As Tesla sells its vehicles directly to customers, bypassing traditional dealerships, the discounts come directly from the company. This, combined with the removal of Foundation series Cybertrucks from the inventory page and the recent request for factory employees to stay home for three days, suggests that demand may be slowing.
The Cybertruck's design and Musk's political leanings have been cited as factors contributing to the truck's diminishing appeal. Furthermore, the likely disappearance of EV incentives under the Trump administration and expected tariffs on the auto industry may make 2025 an even more challenging year for the Cybertruck. As the EV market continues to evolve, Tesla's unusual move to offer discounts on its flagship truck has raised important questions about the company's strategy and the future of the Cybertruck.
