Subaru has officially unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the 2026 Trailseeker SUV, at the New York International Auto Show. This new model marks the Japanese automaker's second foray into the EV market, following the release of the Solterra subcompact crossover in 2022. The Trailseeker is designed to appeal to outdoor enthusiasts, offering a unique blend of ruggedness, versatility, and eco-friendliness.
At first glance, the Trailseeker bears a strong resemblance to its gas-powered counterpart, the Subaru Ascent. However, it's slightly smaller in size, with a more compact design that's reminiscent of the Outback. The EV's exterior features redesigned headlamps, a new front bumper, and 20- and 18-inch wheels, setting it apart from its Solterra sibling.
Under the hood, the Trailseeker boasts a new propulsion system, which Subaru has developed in partnership with Toyota. Although details on the system are scarce, it's clear that the automaker has prioritized performance, with the dual electric motors producing 375 horsepower and enabling the vehicle to tow up to 3,500 pounds. The all-wheel drive system, supported by two electric motors on the front and rear axles, ensures that the Trailseeker can handle challenging terrain with ease.
In terms of range, the Trailseeker's 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery provides an estimated 260 miles of driving distance, making it an attractive option for those who need a reliable EV for daily use. The vehicle also features a North American Charging Standard port, which allows it to tap into the Tesla Supercharging Network, further expanding its charging capabilities.
Inside, the Trailseeker boasts a range of features designed to appeal to outdoor enthusiasts. The cargo area is larger and taller than the Solterra, providing ample space for adventure gear. The interior also features metallic finishes, a center console for personal devices, and a 14-inch touchscreen – the largest in any Subaru model, except for the new 2026 Solterra. The infotainment system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as two wireless, 15W smartphone chargers and two fast USB-C chargers for rear-seat passengers.
In addition to its rugged design and impressive performance, the Trailseeker also comes equipped with an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). This includes features such as blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The ADAS system also features adaptive cruise control, which allows drivers to set a desired speed and following distance, making long road trips more comfortable and convenient.
The Trailseeker is set to go on sale at retailers nationwide in 2026, although pricing details have yet to be announced. With its unique blend of ruggedness, versatility, and eco-friendliness, the Trailseeker is likely to appeal to outdoor enthusiasts who are looking for a reliable and capable EV. As the electric vehicle market continues to grow, Subaru's latest offering is sure to make a splash, particularly in the face of increasing competition from rivals like Rivian.
As the automotive industry continues its shift towards electrification, Subaru's commitment to developing innovative, eco-friendly vehicles is clear. With the Trailseeker, the Japanese automaker is poised to capitalize on the growing demand for electric SUVs, while also staying true to its brand values of ruggedness, reliability, and adventure.
