Softr, a popular no-code app builder, has announced significant product changes that will revolutionize the way users build internal tools and client portals. With over 600,000 users, including project managers, HR employees, and marketing professionals, Softr's platform has become a go-to solution for non-technical individuals looking to create custom applications without requiring extensive coding knowledge.
The company, which initially started as an interface on top of Airtable, has expanded its capabilities to allow users to connect to any third-party database. This means that customers are no longer restricted to Airtable as their data store solution and can now use a wide range of databases, from user-friendly solutions like Google Sheets and Notion to developer-centric databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB.
According to Softr's co-founder and CEO, Mariam Hakobyan, the company's goal is to provide a single source of truth for users, enabling them to build apps on top of their scattered databases to perform operational activities. This new data-agnostic strategy is accompanied by a revamped app-building experience, which includes a set of pre-defined blocks that can be dragged and dropped to build pages with lists, charts, forms, tables, and more.
The platform has also introduced AI features to assist users in building their apps, as well as a permission system that allows for granular control over user access. For instance, users can create two user groups, enabling clients to submit forms and view specific data, while employees can view and edit all data across all clients.
Softr's flexibility and ease of use have already led to some impressive use cases. A university has used the platform to build a curriculum hub, while a building materials company replaced their ordering system with Softr. A veterinary giant working with 250 clinics has also turned to Softr for their customer portal on top of HubSpot.
Hakobyan emphasized that Softr's focus on simplicity and ease of use has been intentional, aiming to make the platform accessible to non-technical users. The company plans to add workflows and tables in the coming months, enabling users to utilize Softr without a third-party data store.
Softr has adopted a freemium strategy, relying heavily on word of mouth as its sales strategy. Despite having around 5,000 paying customers out of 600,000 signups, the company has managed to remain capital efficient since its $13.5 million Series A round in 2022. Hakobyan revealed that Softr is almost profitable, with a 45-person team spread across 15 countries, operating on a remote-first approach.
The implications of Softr's product changes are significant, as they open up new possibilities for non-technical users to create custom applications that meet their specific needs. As the no-code space continues to evolve, Softr's focus on simplicity, flexibility, and scalability positions it as a leader in the market.
Looking ahead, Softr's expansion into new markets and industries is likely to have a profound impact on the way businesses operate. By empowering non-technical users to build custom applications, Softr is democratizing access to technology and enabling organizations to become more agile and efficient.
