The latest features, which include improved hand tracking and access to location data, are designed to enhance the overall AR experience and provide developers with more tools to create innovative applications.

The addition of GPS capabilities enables Lenses, Snap's term for the Spectacles' various AR effects, to utilize location data for simple navigation, multiplayer gaming, and other experiences. For instance, Utopia Labs' NavigatAR Lens creates arrows pointing in the direction users should be headed en route to a specific destination. Another Lens, Path Pioneer, allows developers to create AR walking courses with waypoints that guide users along a specific path, which could be useful for city walking tours or museums and art galleries.

Niantic, the developer behind Pokémon Go, has also updated its Peridot Beyond game to take advantage of the new location data capabilities, enabling multiplayer interactions between users. The game now allows users to see and interact with AR versions of their own Dot characters as well as their friends' Dot characters in the same session. Additionally, developers can now add leaderboards to AR games to encourage users to set new high scores.

The Spectacles' new AR keyboard features a full and numeric layout, leveraging refinements to hand tracking to improve targeting intent while reducing false positives while typing. A new grab gesture has also been introduced, allowing users to interact with Lens experiences more seamlessly. Furthermore, hand tracking now recognizes when users are holding their smartphone, enabling more intuitive interactions.

Despite the exciting updates, it's worth noting that Snap's AR Spectacles are still only available to developers who have to apply for access through the company's Lens Studio desktop tool. The fifth-gen Spectacles, featuring a limited 45 minutes of battery life, come with a hefty price tag of $99 per month, with a minimum commitment of at least a year.
