The Nintendo Switch 2, officially announced but still shrouded in mystery, has had some of its secrets uncovered thanks to filings with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The documents reveal that the console will support Near Field Communication (NFC) and Wi-Fi 6, among other features.
The inclusion of NFC is significant, as it suggests that the Switch 2 will be compatible with Nintendo's Amiibo figurines, which use NFC to unlock in-game content. The FCC filings specify that the RFID feature will be located in the right Joy-Con, just like in the original Switch.
The filings also confirm that the Switch 2 will have two USB-C ports, one on the bottom and one on top, both of which can be used for charging. This is a departure from the original Switch, which only had a single USB-C port on the bottom.
In terms of wireless connectivity, the Switch 2 will support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks with up to 80MHz of bandwidth, an upgrade from the Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) found in the original Switch. However, it does not appear to support Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E, and the FCC tests only covered 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, not the faster 6GHz band.
The FCC filings provide further evidence that the Switch 2 is a real product, with diagrams showing the console being tested with and without attached controllers and with and without a dock. However, some questions remain unanswered, such as whether the Switch 2 has faster charging speeds or more power when docked.
The original Switch shipped with an unusual adapter that charged at up to 15V and 2.6A, rather than following the USB-C Power Delivery (PD) spec used by most modern devices. The FCC filings show that the Switch 2 is still rated for a maximum of 15V, but also mention an AC adapter that goes up to 20V. It is unclear whether either of these adapters uses USB-C PD, and therefore the exact charging speed in watts cannot be determined without knowing the amperage.
Despite these new revelations, Nintendo has yet to announce a release date for the Switch 2, although the company has confirmed that it will be available sometime this year.
The Switch 2's impending release has generated significant buzz in the gaming community, with many fans eagerly anticipating the console's improved features and capabilities. As more information becomes available, it is likely that the hype surrounding the Switch 2 will only continue to grow.
