Finnish game development studio Remedy Entertainment has released The Lake House, a new DLC for Alan Wake 2 that serves as a bridge between the game and its supernatural thriller Control. This short but eerie expansion sees players take on the role of Kiran Estevez, an agent of the Federal Bureau of Control, as she investigates a mysterious research station.
The Lake House is set before the events of Alan Wake 2 and explores the connection between the power of creating "art" and the power of otherworldly forces. The DLC's story is a commentary on the misuse of art for corporate gain, with Remedy's writers taking a clear jab at the corporatization of creativity.
The expansion's setting, a brutalist office space, is reminiscent of Control, and features visual wonders such as looping hallways and rooms of infinite typewriters. The gameplay, while similar to Alan Wake 2, introduces a new enemy type and a familiar character from Control.
The Lake House is significant not only as a standalone expansion but also as a connector between Remedy's growing universe of games. The studio has been building a connected narrative since Control, and The Lake House is a clear indication of its plans to continue expanding this universe. With its release, Remedy is paving the way for future games that will likely feature returning characters and continue the grand plot of its creepy, weird lake of stories.
