Microsoft is set to give its Office apps a significant speed boost, starting with Word in May, thanks to a new scheduled task that runs silently in the background when users boot their PCs. This innovative feature, dubbed Startup Boost, aims to optimize the performance and load times of Office applications, providing a seamless user experience.
The new task, introduced by Microsoft, will ensure that Word and eventually other Office apps open quickly, allowing users to dive into their work without delay. According to Microsoft, the Startup Boost task will run silently in the background, pausing the app until it is launched, and then resuming the sequence or removing the app from memory to reclaim resources.
Notably, Startup Boost will only be available on PCs with at least 8GB of RAM and 5GB of available disk space. Additionally, the feature will be disabled when Energy Saver mode is active, ensuring that users can conserve power when needed. Users who prefer not to have Office apps start quietly in the background at boot can disable the feature inside Word and other Office apps.
While scheduled tasks are commonly used by Microsoft to run Windows tasks silently and optimize the operating system, they are not typically employed by other app developers. Google, for instance, uses a scheduled task for its Chrome updater, and many OEMs use tasks to update drivers and other system components. However, most other apps, such as Adobe Creative Suite, run startup processes in the regular startup section of Windows, where they can be easily disabled.
The introduction of Startup Boost marks a significant step forward in Microsoft's efforts to enhance the overall Office experience. With the feature set to roll out to additional Office apps in future updates, users can expect a faster and more efficient workflow across the entire Office suite.
As Microsoft continues to innovate and refine its Office apps, the company's commitment to delivering a seamless and productive user experience is clear. With Startup Boost, Microsoft is poised to set a new standard for office productivity software, providing users with the tools they need to work efficiently and effectively.
In the broader context, Microsoft's move highlights the ongoing importance of optimizing app performance in today's fast-paced digital landscape. As users increasingly rely on software applications to manage their work and personal lives, the need for speed, efficiency, and reliability has never been more pressing. With Startup Boost, Microsoft is demonstrating its dedication to meeting these demands, and setting a powerful precedent for the tech industry as a whole.
