OpenAI to Sunset GPT-4.5 API Access, Citing High Costs and Performance Limitations

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research organization, has announced that it will soon wind down the availability of its largest-ever AI model, GPT-4.5, via its API. The decision comes just a few months after the model's release in late February, and is attributed to the high operational costs and performance limitations of GPT-4.5.

Developers will have access to GPT-4.5 via OpenAI's API until July 14, after which they will need to transition to another model in OpenAI's catalog. The company is positioning GPT-4.1, which launched on Monday, as the preferred replacement. According to an OpenAI spokesperson, GPT-4.1 offers similar or improved performance to GPT-4.5 in key areas at a much lower cost.

The decision to deprecate GPT-4.5 is not a surprise, given the model's high operational costs. OpenAI had warned in February that it was evaluating whether to serve GPT-4.5 via its API in the long term, citing the model's expensive pricing structure. GPT-4.5 costs $75 for every million input tokens (roughly 750,000 words) and $150 per million output tokens, making it one of OpenAI's costliest offerings.

Despite its scale, GPT-4.5 falls short of "frontier-level" on a number of industry benchmarks. The model, code-named Orion, was trained using more computing power and data than any of OpenAI's previous releases, and improves upon its predecessor, GPT-4o, in areas such as writing and persuasiveness. However, its limitations and high costs have led OpenAI to prioritize building future models.

It's worth noting that GPT-4.5 will still be available in research preview for paying customers via ChatGPT, OpenAI's popular conversational AI platform. The phase-out only applies to the API, which is used by developers to integrate OpenAI's models into their applications.

The introduction of GPT-4.1 marks a significant shift in OpenAI's strategy, as the company seeks to balance performance and cost. GPT-4.1 is positioned as a more affordable and efficient alternative to GPT-4.5, and its launch is likely to have significant implications for the developer community and the broader AI ecosystem.

As the AI landscape continues to evolve, OpenAI's decision to sunset GPT-4.5 API access serves as a reminder of the importance of balancing innovation with practicality. The company's focus on building future models and improving performance at a lower cost is likely to have a lasting impact on the industry, and will be closely watched by developers, researchers, and investors alike.
