Nintendo is gearing up for the launch of its highly anticipated Switch 2 console, and president Shuntaro Furukawa has revealed that the company is "taking risks and proceeding with production so that we can meet as much demand as possible." This statement comes as a response to the struggles Nintendo faced with meeting demand during the original Switch's launch in 2017.
Furukawa's comments were made during an earnings Q&A, where he emphasized the importance of gauging demand following the Switch 2-focused Nintendo Direct on April 2nd. Although the company won't reveal its specific Switch 2 production plans until it releases its business plan for the next fiscal year, which begins in April, Furukawa assured that Nintendo will make preparations to respond as quickly as possible to meet demand.
The original Switch's launch was marred by stock shortages, which led to frustrated customers and a significant backlog of orders. It seems that Nintendo is determined to avoid a repeat of this situation with the Switch 2. Furukawa's statement suggests that the company is willing to take calculated risks to ensure that it can meet the expected high demand for the new console.
In addition to discussing production, Furukawa also touched on the importance of "dedicated software" for the Switch 2's launch. This could indicate that Nintendo won't be releasing many new games that are compatible with both the original Switch and the Switch 2, although Switch games will be backward compatible with the Switch 2. The only known Switch 2 game so far is a new Mario Kart title, but it's unclear whether this game will also be available on the original Switch.
Nintendo also confirmed that it has no plans to change the price of the original Switch "at this time," but the price of the Switch 2 remains unknown. The company is expected to announce the price of the Switch 2 at the upcoming Switch 2 Direct. Furthermore, despite pulling back on mobile apps, Nintendo is still working on developing new game apps and exploring ways to link smartphones to its games.
While Nintendo is keeping a tight lid on Switch 2 details ahead of the Switch 2 Direct, the company did announce that the Nintendo Switch has sold over 150 million units, putting it on track to surpass the Nintendo DS. The Switch 2's launch is highly anticipated, and fans are eagerly waiting for more information about the console's features, games, and pricing.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, Nintendo's ability to meet demand for the Switch 2 will be crucial in maintaining its market share. With the company's focus on dedicated software and its willingness to take risks to meet demand, it's clear that Nintendo is committed to making the Switch 2 a success.
