The National Hockey League (NHL) is taking a significant step towards enhancing game awareness for its on-ice officials, announcing a partnership with Apple to wear custom Apple Watches during games. The collaboration will see officials donning Apple Watches running a special NHL Watch Comms app, designed to provide real-time game information and haptic alerts to improve situational awareness.
The NHL Watch Comms app, developed in conjunction with tech firm Presidio, enables officials to view the game clock directly from their wrist, receive haptic alerts for penalty box timers, and access other critical in-game information. The app is synced with the NHL's Oasis feed, a cloud-based system that tracks player movements, game telemetry, and other data, ensuring that all officials have access to the same information.
The move is aimed at addressing the significant challenge of situational awareness faced by on-ice officials, who must simultaneously track the puck, avoid players, and monitor zones on the ice while keeping an eye on the game clock. According to Dave Lehanski, the NHL's executive vice president of business development and innovation, officials often have to crane their necks to view the game clock on the video board, which can be less than ideal given the fast-paced nature of hockey games.
The Apple Watches, which will be specifically designated for in-game use, will provide officials with a more convenient and efficient way to stay informed. Officials can choose between the rugged Apple Watch Ultra or the slimmer Series models, depending on their individual needs. Andres de Corral, vice president of digital services at Presidio, emphasized that the haptic responses will provide non-visual cues to officials, allowing them to maintain their focus on the game.
This partnership marks the latest collaboration between the NHL and Apple, following the league's adoption of iPads and Macs in 2017 to deliver game video to coaches and players on the bench. Apple has also worked with other sports leagues, including the World Surf League, which adopted the Apple Watch as its official wearable in 2023.
The integration of Apple Watches into NHL games is expected to have a significant impact on the sport, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of on-ice officials. As the league continues to explore innovative technologies to improve the game, this partnership serves as a testament to the growing intersection of sports and technology.
With the NHL Watch Comms app and Apple Watches, officials will be better equipped to make accurate calls and maintain a high level of situational awareness, ultimately contributing to a more enjoyable and competitive game experience for players and fans alike.
