Logitech has released the Powerplay 2, a wireless charging mousepad that aims to provide a more affordable option for users. Priced at $100, the Powerplay 2 is $20 cheaper than its predecessor, but the cost-cutting measures have resulted in a compromised product that loses some of the original's key features.
The Powerplay 2 boasts a 15% wider charging area and a thinner design, measuring just 3.5mm in thickness. The mousepad also comes with a fixed cable, replacing the old micro-USB cable. However, this change means that users can no longer easily take the mousepad off their desk when needed. Furthermore, the Powerplay 2 no longer includes a wireless mouse receiver, a feature that was convenient for users who wanted to leave their mouse's dongle stowed away.
Another notable omission is the programmable RGB light inside the Logitech G logo, which has been replaced with a dull black logo. While this may not be a significant loss for some users, it does contribute to the overall feeling of a cheaper product. Additionally, the Powerplay 2 only comes with one mousepad, whereas the original came with two – a hard and a cloth option.
Despite these compromises, the Powerplay 2 still achieves its core goal of providing wireless charging for compatible mice. The new charging coin also doesn't seem to work with the original pad and vice versa, so users will need to purchase the new Powerplay 2 if they want to take advantage of the updated features.
Logitech has not commented on future plans for the Powerplay 2, including potential discounts or bundles. However, the company does anticipate that retailers will offer bundles shortly after launch. With the original Powerplay no longer in stock at major retailers, it's likely that the Powerplay 2 will be the only option for users looking for a wireless charging mousepad.
The Powerplay 2 is set to be available on Amazon and Logitech's site on March 11th. While it may not be the upgrade that users were hoping for, it still provides a convenient wireless charging solution for compatible mice. Perhaps with time, Logitech will release a more comprehensive update that addresses the compromises made in the Powerplay 2.
