Lenovo's Legion Go handheld gaming PC, which launched in the spring for $700, may soon have a more affordable sibling. According to a recent leak, the Legion Go S is expected to start at around $399, making it a more accessible option for gamers on a budget. Windows Central has obtained official-looking renders of the upcoming device, providing a first glimpse into its design and features.
The Legion Go S is rumored to be powered by AMD's Rembrandt APU, which was revealed in a firmware leak last week. While it's based on the new Ryzen Z2 platform, the chip's Zen 3-plus cores are not as powerful as the current generation Z1 Extreme with Zen 4 cores found in the current Legion Go. This compromise on processing power may be a key factor in the Legion Go S's lower price point.
In terms of design, the Legion Go S appears to have some notable differences from its more expensive counterpart. The leaked renders show a white colorway with non-removable grips and triggers, similar to the Asus ROG Ally. This is in contrast to the current Legion Go, which features removable controller grips similar to the Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con controllers. The Legion Go S also sports RGB lights, two USB-C ports on top, and a circular D-Pad instead of the four-way version found on the regular Legion Go.
Another interesting design element is the TrackPoint style nub mouse, which replaces the trackpad found on the current Legion Go. This may provide a more precise and intuitive gaming experience, especially for those who prefer a more tactile approach to navigation.
The emergence of the Legion Go S is part of a larger trend in the handheld PC gaming market. With devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally, gamers are increasingly looking for portable, powerful, and affordable options. The Legion Go S, if priced correctly, could be a compelling addition to this growing market.
While Lenovo has not officially confirmed the Legion Go S, the leaked renders and firmware information suggest that the device is likely to be announced in the near future. As the handheld PC gaming market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the Legion Go S fits into the larger landscape and whether it can carve out a niche for itself among gamers.
