Kenyan Authorities Seize 7,500 Liters of Bootleg Ethanol, Highlighting Need for Improved Surveillance

In a significant crackdown on illicit trade, Kenyan authorities have seized 7,500 liters of bootleg ethanol at the Lwakhakha border station in Bungoma, Western Region. The contraband was concealed under 2 tonnes of oranges coming from a neighboring country, with an estimated customs duty and tax value of Sh4 million.

This bust highlights the importance of improved surveillance and multi-agency collaboration in combating transnational crimes and illegal trade. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has implemented a multi-departmental approach, actively participating in local security committees and sharing intelligence to prevent illicit trading within its borders.

The seizure is a significant success in the KRA's efforts to protect the integrity of Kenya's trading environment, and serves as a warning to smugglers and illegal traders.
