Volvo has officially unveiled its latest electric sedan, the ES90, which boasts an impressive 434 miles of range, making it the longest-range EV in the company's lineup. The ES90 is not only a significant addition to Volvo's electric vehicle portfolio but also a bold move in a market where sedans are increasingly being phased out in favor of SUVs and trucks.
The ES90's range is based on the generous WLTP standard, with the EPA rating likely to be lower. The sedan will come in three variants, including a base model with a single motor mounted on the rear axle, a dual-motor all-wheel drive version, and a high-performance dual-motor trim. The latter can churn out an impressive 670 horsepower and 635 lb-ft of torque, with a zero-to-60mph time of just 3.9 seconds.
In addition to its impressive performance, the ES90 features advanced tech, including an 800-volt architecture for fast charging, which can add 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes. The sedan also boasts a new battery management software, allowing it to gain 300km of range in just 10 minutes of charging. The 800-volt system is unique in Volvo's lineup, but comparable to other fast-charging EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.
The ES90's design is a notable departure from traditional sedans, with a tall and slightly boxy profile that blurs the line between sedans and SUVs. The sedan's roofline is sleek, its door handles flush, and it features a lidar sensor mounted on the roof. The front end resembles the EX90, with Volvo's signature "Thor's hammer" LED headlights, while the rear features new C-shaped LED lights.
In terms of interior features, the ES90 includes Google's built-in infotainment system, which includes native apps like Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play. The sedan also features a 5G system powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, a five-inch instrument cluster, and a larger 14.5-inch center screen display.
The ES90 is built on Volvo's new Superset tech stack, which includes dual Nvidia computers with the ability to perform 508 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This advanced computing system will enable features such as AI-based active safety features, car sensors, and efficient battery management.
While the ES90 is an exciting addition to Volvo's electric vehicle lineup, its availability in the US remains uncertain. The company has yet to announce when the sedan will be available in the US market, although it is currently available to order in most European countries. The price of the ES90 has also not been disclosed.
Volvo's decision to launch an electric sedan is a bold move, especially considering most US automakers have dropped sedans from their lineups in favor of trucks and SUVs. However, the company is hoping to fill a gap in the market with the ES90, which could prove challenging. Volkswagen recently canceled plans to sell its own electric sedan, the ID.7, in the US.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the ES90's US availability, the sedan's impressive range, fast charging, and advanced tech features make it a significant addition to Volvo's electric vehicle portfolio. As the company continues to push towards its goal of selling "90 to 100 percent... electrified models" by 2030, the ES90 could play a crucial role in achieving that goal.
