Google Unveils Gemini-Powered 'Add to Calendar' Feature for Gmail

Google has rolled out a new feature for Google Workspace customers, allowing them to add events to their Google Calendar directly from emails. This innovative capability is powered by Google's Gemini AI and is designed to streamline users' workflow and increase productivity.

The feature, which is available in English and on the web for now, uses Gemini's AI technology to automatically detect calendar-related content in an email. Once detected, an "Add to calendar" button appears, enabling users to easily add the event to their calendar. After clicking the button, the side panel in Gmail opens to confirm that the event has been successfully added.

It's worth noting that the feature has some limitations. For instance, calendar events created via the "Add to calendar" button won't include other guests, and it won't appear for emails with already-extracted events, such as restaurant and flight reservations. Additionally, the feature is only available to users on specific Google Workspace tiers, including Business and Enterprise, as well as customers with a Gemini Education, Gemini Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium plan.

Admins can enable the "Add to calendar" feature by switching on smart features and personalization from the Workspace Admin console. This new capability is the latest in a series of Gemini-powered tools to be integrated into Gmail. In June 2024, Google added new features to Gmail on the web, including tools to help users write emails, summarize email threads, ask questions, and find specific information from emails within an inbox. Some of these capabilities were later rolled out to the Gmail apps for iOS and Android towards the end of last year.

The integration of Gemini AI into Gmail is a significant development, demonstrating Google's continued investment in AI-powered productivity tools. As the technology advances, we can expect to see even more innovative features that simplify and enhance the user experience. With the "Add to calendar" feature, Google is taking another step towards making its suite of productivity tools more seamless and efficient.

The implications of this feature extend beyond individual users, as it has the potential to transform the way teams and organizations manage their calendars and schedules. By streamlining the process of adding events to calendars, Google is enabling its customers to work more efficiently and effectively, ultimately driving business productivity and success.

As Google continues to push the boundaries of AI-powered innovation, it will be interesting to see how this feature evolves and expands to other languages and platforms. With its Gemini-powered "Add to calendar" feature, Google is once again demonstrating its commitment to harnessing the power of AI to improve the user experience and drive business success.
