Fitbit, a leading wearable technology company, has agreed to pay a $12.25 million fine to settle allegations that its Ionic smartwatches caused burn injuries to customers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) provisionally accepted the settlement, which stems from reports of overheating lithium-ion batteries in the devices.

The issue dates back to 2018, with complaints continuing through 2019 and 2020. Despite a firmware update in 2020 aimed at addressing the problem, the CPSC received 115 reports of overheating batteries, including 78 instances of burn injuries. Two customers suffered third-degree burns, while four others experienced second-degree burns. The recall, which was initiated in 2022, affected 1.7 million Ionic watches.
