Dasung Unveils Portable E Ink Monitor with 60Hz Refresh Rate

Dasung has announced its latest innovation in the world of E Ink technology - the Paperlike 103, a portable monitor that boasts a 60Hz refresh rate, a significant upgrade from its predecessors. This new feature promises to provide a smoother experience for users, making tasks like scrolling documents and websites, and even watching videos, appear more fluid and similar to LCD and OLED displays.

The Paperlike 103 features a 10.3-inch e-paper panel, similar in size to E Ink-based electronic notepads like the Boox Go 10.3 or the Amazon Kindle Scribe. While these devices typically have limited refresh rates, Dasung's new monitor is designed to offer the advantages of E Ink technology, including less eye strain and low power usage, while providing a more seamless user experience.

In terms of specifications, the Paperlike 103 has a resolution of 1,872 x 1,404 pixels in a 4:3 aspect ratio, resulting in a 227ppi density. Although this is slightly behind the 300ppi E Ink screens found on the Kindle Paperwhite, Scribe, and other e-readers, the monitor still offers similar lighting options, including LEDs along the edge of the screen that don't blast directly into the user's eyes, and color temperature adjustments to reduce eye strain.

The monitor's body is constructed from aluminum alloy, making it both lightweight and strong enough to withstand accidental compression in a bag. Additionally, there is no battery to add bulk and weight, as the Paperlike 103 relies on USB-C for both power and connectivity to source devices like computers and mobile devices. A set of six physical buttons on the left bezel allows users to turn the monitor on and off, adjust brightness and color temperature, and switch between different display modes optimized for text, video, or imagery.

The Paperlike 103 is currently priced at 1,999 yuan, or around $274, and is available to order through the Chinese retailer, Jing Dong. Although it is not yet available globally, Dasung typically releases its products outside of China eventually. The company currently sells a similar version of the Paperlike 103 with a larger 13.3-inch E Ink panel, starting at $699, which has a refresh rate limited to 40Hz.

The implications of this new technology are significant, as it offers users a more seamless and comfortable experience when working with E Ink devices. With its low power consumption and eye-friendly design, the Paperlike 103 is poised to become a popular choice for those seeking a portable and efficient monitor. As the technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Dasung and other companies in the industry respond to the growing demand for innovative E Ink solutions.

In conclusion, Dasung's Paperlike 103 represents a significant step forward in the development of E Ink technology, offering users a more fluid and comfortable experience. As the company continues to push the boundaries of what is possible with E Ink, it will be exciting to see how this technology impacts the world of gadgets and beyond.
