Apple's Next-Gen CarPlay Still Nowhere to be Found, Two and a Half Years After Announcement

It's been two and a half years since Apple announced its next-generation CarPlay, promising a revolutionary in-car experience. However, as 2024 comes to a close, there is still no sign of the feature in any production cars, leaving many to wonder what's causing the delay.

Apple's website still proudly displays the promise of "First models arrive in 2024," but it seems increasingly unlikely that this will happen. In fact, several car manufacturers that were initially on board with the new CarPlay, such as Porsche and Aston Martin, have recently declined to provide a timeline for its rollout.

The only changes to CarPlay that have been seen so far are minor updates, such as CarPlay mapping directions appearing in the instrument cluster in cars from manufacturers like Polestar, Porsche, and Lincoln. While these updates are welcome, they hardly constitute the "next generation" of CarPlay that Apple promised.

It's not just Apple that's struggling to get its in-car software off the ground. Google's Android Auto has also faced resistance from car manufacturers, with some, like General Motors and Rivian, opting to develop their own in-car infotainment systems instead. This desire for control over the in-car experience is a major hurdle for both Apple and Google, as they seek to integrate their software into vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius has been particularly vocal about his company's reluctance to adopt Apple's CarPlay, stating that Apple won't be taking over all the screens in its cars. This stance is likely to be echoed by other manufacturers, making it increasingly difficult for Apple to find partners willing to adopt its next-generation CarPlay.

Despite the lack of progress, Apple continues to talk about its plans for CarPlay, but it's unclear what cars, if any, will eventually support the feature. As the year draws to a close, it's hard not to wonder if Apple's next-generation CarPlay is nothing more than a concept that will never see the light of day.

The delay is not only disappointing for Apple fans but also raises questions about the company's ability to execute on its promises. As the tech giant continues to expand its ecosystem, it's essential that it can deliver on its commitments, lest it risk damaging its reputation and losing the trust of its loyal customer base.

In conclusion, the absence of Apple's next-generation CarPlay is a significant setback for the company and a blow to those who were eagerly anticipating the feature. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Apple responds to this challenge and whether it can eventually deliver on its promises.
