The latest additions to the Claude family are Claude 3.5 Haiku, a lightweight model, and Claude 3.7 Sonnet, a midrange, hybrid reasoning model that is currently Anthropic's flagship AI model. Notably, Claude 3 Opus, the largest and most expensive model, is currently the least capable, but an updated version is expected to change this.
Claude 3.7 Sonnet stands out for its ability to provide both real-time answers and more considered, "thought-out" answers to questions. Users can choose to turn on the AI model's reasoning abilities, which prompt the model to "think" for a short or long period of time. This feature makes Claude 3.7 Sonnet Anthropic's first AI model that can "reason," a technique many AI labs have turned to as traditional methods of improving AI performance taper off.
All Claude models share a standard 200,000-token context window, enabling them to follow multistep instructions, use tools, and produce structured output in formats like JSON. However, unlike many major generative AI models, Anthropic's models cannot access the internet, making them less effective at answering current events questions, and they cannot generate images, only simple line diagrams.
In terms of pricing, the Claude models are available through Anthropic's API and managed platforms such as Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud's Vertex AI. The costs vary depending on the model, with Claude 3.5 Haiku being the most affordable and Claude 3 Opus being the most expensive.
