Scott Belsky, the head of product at Adobe and co-creator of Behance, has announced his departure from the design software giant to pursue a new venture in film production. Belsky will be joining independent film production company A24 as a partner, marking a significant shift in his career.
Belsky initially joined Adobe in 2012 when the company acquired Behance, a platform for artists and designers, for $150 million. He briefly left Adobe in 2016 but rejoined in 2017 to lead the company's product development across Creative Cloud. During his tenure, Belsky played a crucial role in launching Adobe's lineup of Firefly generative AI products, including its first AI video model in October last year.
Belsky was also instrumental in Adobe's attempted acquisition of rival product design platform Figma for $20 billion in 2023. Although the merger agreement was ultimately blocked by UK and EU regulators, requiring Adobe to pay Figma a $1 billion termination fee, Belsky's efforts demonstrated his commitment to driving innovation in the design and tech industries.
In his farewell message, Belsky expressed his gratitude to the Adobe team and customer base, stating that the company's strategy and pipeline have never been stronger. He will be relocating to New York City and maintaining a connection with Adobe as a "future tech partner." According to Adobe's chief marketing officer, Lara Balazs, Belsky's new role at A24 will involve building "tools and resources" to support filmmakers' creative visions.
The partnership between Adobe and A24 is expected to have significant implications for the entertainment industry. As Balazs noted, Adobe has always partnered with studios around the world, and conversations have already begun on how the two companies can collaborate to advance the art of storytelling. Belsky's experience developing technology will undoubtedly bring a unique perspective to the film industry, and his continued involvement with Adobe will ensure a seamless transition.
This move marks a significant shift in Belsky's career, as he trades in his role as a tech industry leader for a chance to explore his passion for filmmaking and storytelling. As the boundaries between technology and entertainment continue to blur, Belsky's decision to join A24 could have far-reaching consequences for the future of content creation.
With Belsky's departure, Adobe will need to find a suitable replacement to lead its product development efforts. However, given the company's strong pipeline and strategy, it is unlikely that Belsky's exit will have a significant impact on Adobe's operations in the short term. Instead, the focus will be on how Belsky's new role at A24 will shape the future of film production and the intersection of technology and entertainment.
