Zimbabwe is making significant strides in its space program, with plans to launch its third earth observation satellite, ZimSat-3, in under 5 years. This comes on the heels of the successful launch of ZimSat-2 in November 2024, demonstrating the country's commitment to advancing its space capabilities.

The Southern African nation is working on a number of communication satellites, in addition to ZimSat-3, with the goal of enhancing ground-based communications. According to Painos Gweme, director-general of the Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA), the satellite projects are currently underway, with a focus on addressing specific needs of Zimbabwe.

Gweme emphasized that the satellite design, manufacture, test, and launch into space involve multiple activities, processes, and stakeholders. He noted that the country currently lacks real-time earth observation capabilities, which provide updated satellite images every 5 to 6 hours, crucial for crop yield analysis, monitoring soil erosion, and assessing environmental changes.

ZimSat-2, launched in November 2024, was initially expected to be launched by May but faced a minor roadblock. The satellite was launched as part of a commercial rideshare mission, overseen by GK Launch Services, from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia. ZimSat-1, launched in November 2022, is currently used to monitor drought conditions, mining mapping, and other data-driven operations from the Mazowe Ground Station.

The Zimbabwean government, through ZINGSA, views these space endeavors as critical to the country's modernization and manufacturing ambitions. To support these developments, ZINGSA has upgraded the Mazowe Ground Control Station to accommodate advanced frequency bands, strengthening the nation's satellite communication capacity.

In addition to its satellite projects, ZINGSA is actively involved in inspecting mining villages impacted by illicit mining operations, ensuring the safety of people and infrastructure. The agency's efforts demonstrate Zimbabwe's commitment to leveraging space technology to drive economic growth and development.
