X Corp Hires Former WSJ Editor to Lead News Group, Eyes Journalism Revamp

X Corp, formerly Twitter, has taken a significant step towards transforming its platform into a hub for journalism and news, with the hiring of John Stoll, a former editor and Detroit bureau chief at The Wall Street Journal, to lead its news group and partnership team.

The announcement was made on Tuesday during X Corp's keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2025) in Las Vegas, where CEO Linda Yaccarino expressed her excitement about the opportunity for journalists on X to "explore their craft," thrive, and make a great living. Yaccarino was referring to the company's creator revenue share program, which rewards popular content that increases engagement.

On X, creators with a paid subscription who meet certain baseline requirements in terms of followers and impressions are paid based on engagement from other Premium X users with their content. While paying journalists based on clicks is not a new idea, X's approach raises questions about the potential impact on the quality and diversity of news content.

Yaccarino's comments during the CES keynote hinted at a broader vision for X as a platform, where "the shift in the narrative is now in the user's hand" and change is inspired by what's allowed by "protected free speech and a two-way conversation." This vision appears to be at odds with traditional legacy media, which Yaccarino described as having become "almost like a fan service to make sure that you're speaking to a niche audience to make your budget."

Instead, X Corp seems to be positioning itself as a platform that can provide a more democratic and inclusive space for journalism, where "journalistic curiosity" can thrive. However, the company's algorithm-driven approach to news distribution raises concerns about the potential for bias and manipulation, particularly given the influence of X's owner, Elon Musk.

Despite these concerns, the hiring of John Stoll, a seasoned journalist with a strong background in editorial leadership, suggests that X Corp is serious about building a robust news ecosystem. Stoll's responsibilities will include leading the news group and partnership team, with a focus on expanding news on X at a global scale.

As X Corp continues to evolve its platform and business model, the implications for the future of journalism and news will be closely watched. Will X Corp's approach lead to a more diverse and vibrant news landscape, or will it perpetuate existing biases and inequalities? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: X Corp is staking a claim as a major player in the future of news and journalism.
