WordPress Community Divided as Co-Creator Matt Mullenweg Faces Criticism Over Governance

In a surprising turn of events, WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg has come under fire from the community he helped build, with many calling for a more democratic approach to the project's governance. The controversy comes on the heels of a preliminary injunction won by web hosting provider WP Engine against Mullenweg and rival hosting provider Automattic, which has sparked a heated debate about the future of the open-source platform.

In response to the injunction, Mullenweg announced that WordPress.org would be taking a holiday break, suspending free services such as new account registrations, plug-ins, themes, and photo directory submissions. However, this move has been seen by many as a power play, with some accusing Mullenweg of using his position to stifle competition and silence critics.

One of the most vocal critics has been Joost de Valk, CEO of WordPress-based SEO optimization tool Yoast, who wrote a blog post calling for a more federated and independent approach to WordPress. De Valk argued that the community needs to decide whether it wants to be led by a single person who controls everything, or if it wants a more democratic approach. He proposed the creation of a WordPress Foundation-like entity to lead the project, and suggested handing over all community assets, such as themes and plug-ins, to that entity.

De Valk's views were supported by Karim Marucchi, CEO of enterprise web consulting firm Crowd Favorite, who wrote a separate blog post echoing the need for a more democratic approach to WordPress governance. The calls for change have been building for some time, with 20 signatories, including core WordPress contributors, criticizing Mullenweg's actions in an open letter earlier this month.

Mullenweg has responded to the criticism, saying that de Valk's idea is a "great idea" but should be pursued under a different name. However, this response has been seen by many as an attempt to deflect criticism and maintain the status quo. WP Engine, which has been at the center of the controversy, has welcomed de Valk's initiative and committed to working on the project with other leaders.

The debate highlights the tensions between the open-source ethos of WordPress and the commercial interests of Automattic, which has an exclusive commercial license for the WordPress trademark. As the community grapples with the future of the platform, one thing is clear: the current governance structure is no longer seen as tenable by many, and a more democratic approach is needed to ensure the long-term success of WordPress.

As the community looks to the future, de Valk has announced plans to discuss the path forward with leaders in the WordPress community in January. The outcome of these discussions will be closely watched, as the fate of the world's most widely used content management system hangs in the balance.

Ultimately, the controversy serves as a reminder that the success of WordPress is not due to any one person or entity, but rather the collective efforts of a global community of developers, agencies, businesses, and users. As the community navigates this critical juncture, it is imperative that the voices of all stakeholders are heard and valued.
