Walmart has initiated a recall of approximately 18,000 Swagtron electric scooters due to fire and safety concerns related to their lithium-ion batteries. The recall comes after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported seven incidents of the SG-5 Swagger 5 Boost batteries overheating, smoking, melting, or igniting, including a fire that caused burn injuries and substantial property damage to a residential apartment building.

The affected models, which were sold at Walmart and Sam's Club between May 2018 and October 2024, include SWGR5-V2-SLV, SWGR5-V2-2, SG5 Boost, SG-5S, 96262-2, 96262-9, SG-5S, and 96560-2. These scooters were priced between $175 and $450, and customers are being emailed instructions on how to receive a full refund. The model numbers can be found on the side of the scooter deck.

Notably, Swagtron, the manufacturer of the recalled scooters, has not issued a recall despite the CPSC's warnings. In fact, the CPSC stated that Swagtron has ignored its requests for a recall and information about the product. This lack of response has raised concerns about the company's commitment to consumer safety.

The CPSC has urged consumers to immediately stop using and charging the recalled electric scooters, cut the throttle cord, and dispose of the entire product following local and state hazardous waste disposal procedures. This recall follows an earlier warning issued by the CPSC in October, which advised consumers to cease using SG-5 Swagger 5 Boost scooters purchased from various retailers, including Tractor Supply, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam's Club, Amazon, eBay, and Swagtron's website, from 2019 onwards.

Swagtron, previously known as Swagway, has a history of safety issues. In 2016, the company was forced to recall 267,000 hoverboards due to battery packs that posed a fire risk. It's concerning that the company has not taken proactive steps to address the current safety concerns, despite the CPSC's warnings.

The recall highlights the importance of proper safety testing and quality control in the electric vehicle industry. As the demand for eco-friendly transportation options continues to grow, manufacturers must prioritize consumer safety to avoid such incidents and maintain public trust.

Consumers who have purchased the affected scooters are advised to take immediate action to ensure their safety. Meanwhile, Swagtron's silence on the matter raises questions about its commitment to consumer safety and its willingness to take responsibility for its products.
