The United States has taken the rare step of expelling South Africa's ambassador to Washington, citing his alleged "race-baiting" and strong anti-Trump sentiments. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the announcement on Friday, describing Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool as a "race-baiting politician who hates America and hates @Potus (Trump)".
The move marks a significant escalation in the deteriorating diplomatic relations between the US and South Africa, which have worsened since Trump's return to power. The expulsion is particularly notable, as it is rare for the US to take such action against a senior official. According to Reuters, a State Department spokesperson confirmed that the ambassador must depart by March 21.
The decision comes on the heels of a series of tensions between the two nations. Earlier this month, the US cut financial aid to South Africa, citing opposition to its land reform policies and its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. South African-born billionaire Elon Musk, a Trump ally, has also criticized the country's land policies, claiming that white South Africans face "racist ownership laws". Musk further alleged that his satellite internet service, Starlink, is barred from operating in South Africa because he is "not Black".
In January, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a bill allowing land expropriation in the public interest, in some cases without compensation. However, he has defended the policy as a necessary step to address racial disparities in land ownership, emphasizing that no land has been seized under the legislation. The South African presidency has described the decision to expel the ambassador as "regrettable", stating that the country remains committed to fostering a mutually beneficial relationship with the US and will address the issue through diplomatic channels.
The expulsion of the South African ambassador is likely to have significant implications for diplomatic relations between the two nations. The move may be seen as a further indication of the Trump administration's willingness to take a hardline stance on issues related to race and national identity. As diplomatic tensions continue to escalate, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold and what consequences it may have for bilateral relations.
In the meantime, the South African government has reiterated its commitment to addressing the country's complex history of racial disparities, including those related to land ownership. As the situation continues to unfold, it will be important to monitor developments and assess their implications for the region and the global community.
