The United States has been accused of sending a surveillance aircraft into the airspace of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, sparking widespread concern and speculation about possible espionage in sensitive areas with oil facilities and military bases.
According to reports, the Bombardier Challenger 604, registered as N9191 and stationed in Djibouti, made multiple flights over the two countries on November 14, 15, and 26. The aircraft's maneuvers have raised suspicions among officials in both countries, who are questioning the true purpose of the flights.
An anonymous official in Uganda told local media outlet Chimpreport that the spy plane's focus on the Albertine Area, which is home to oil production facilities and specialized military bases, has raised eyebrows. "So, of all places, why was the spy plane focused on this area? And what type of data was collected by this spy plane?" the source asked.
Uganda's defense ministry has confirmed that the Bombardier Challenger 604 made three trips over Beni in the DRC and Kasese and Bundibugyo in Uganda. Brig. Felix Kulayigye, spokesperson for Uganda's defense ministry, stated that the matter is being handled at the highest level.
Interestingly, a month prior to the flights, the Office of the Chief of Joint Staff of the Uganda Peoples' Defense Forces, Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, received an application for overflight authorization from the U.S. Defense Attaché's Office in Kampala. The U.S. claimed that the flight was for the purpose of dropping off soldiers and equipment to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, the DRC reportedly did not receive the flight.
Informed officials have revealed that suspicious actions by Ugandan radars were carried out close to UPDF military installations and oil-producing regions in the Albertine zone. This has led to speculation about the true intentions behind the U.S. flights, with many wondering if the country is seeking to gather intelligence on the region's oil resources.
The allegations have significant implications for regional security and diplomatic relations between the U.S. and the affected countries. As the story continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the U.S. will respond to these allegations and what measures will be taken to address the concerns of the DRC and Uganda.
In the broader context, this incident highlights the ongoing struggle for control and influence in Africa's oil-rich regions. With great powers like the U.S., China, and Russia vying for dominance, it is essential for African nations to remain vigilant and protect their sovereignty.
