Tumblr, the web blogging site owned by Automattic, has officially launched its Communities feature out of beta, a year after initial tests began. This new feature provides semi-private spaces on Tumblr where users can connect with others around topics of interest, similar to Reddit's forums known as subreddits or X's Communities.

The Communities feature first entered public beta this spring, offering Tumblr users dedicated feeds that are separate from its existing algorithmic "For You" and chronological "Following" feeds. The idea behind Communities is to refocus Tumblr around what it does best: connecting users with their interests. This is an area where Tumblr has already established a strong reputation, particularly in fan communities centered around TV shows, movies, video games, actors, musicians, and artists, among other things.

The Communities feature capitalizes on this built-in demand, allowing users to organize themselves into groups as broad as liking Taylor Swift or art, or as niche as being fans of the "Wicked" book who have not seen the movie or musical. By doing so, Tumblr aims to provide users with a better way to find blogs they want to follow and make online collections, compared to traditional methods like searching topics or following hashtags.

Communities themselves can be either public or private, giving users the flexibility to create large groups or simply network with friends. To facilitate discovery, Tumblr will surface Communities at the top of search results and offer a dedicated landing page where users can browse Communities directly. At launch, the feature will be available on the web, iOS, and Android platforms.

The launch of Communities comes at a time when Tumblr is undergoing significant changes. Since being acquired by Automattic, the platform has seen layoffs and restructuring efforts as it continues to operate at a loss. Additionally, Tumblr plans to migrate its backend to WordPress, a move aimed at increasing operational efficiency.
