A staggering 10,457 migrants died while attempting to reach Spain by boat from West Africa in 2024, according to a recent report by migrant rights group Walking Borders. This devastating toll underscores the perilous journey many migrants undertake in search of a better life.
The report reveals that at least 30 people lost their lives each day while attempting to cross the Atlantic route from West African countries such as Mauritania and Senegal to the Canary Islands. In a recent incident, 50 migrants may have drowned while trying to make this treacherous journey this year.
According to the report, Moroccan authorities managed to rescue 36 people from a boat that left Mauritania on January 2, 2025. A total of 86 migrants were on deck, many of whom were from Pakistan. The incident highlights the dire need for improved rescue operations and cooperation between authorities to prevent such tragedies.
Walking Borders claimed to have alerted authorities about the missing boat days before the rescue operation took place. An organization called Alarm Phone, which helps migrants in distress at sea, also contacted Spain's maritime rescue service for assistance; however, the service said it did not have any information about the boat.
In response to this tragedy, Fernando Clavijo, the leader of the Canary Islands, shared his sorrow for the victims and urged Spain and Europe to take action to prevent further loss of life. He emphasized that "the Atlantic cannot continue to be the graveyard of Africa."
Helena Maleno, the CEO of Walking Borders, shared that most of those who drowned were from Pakistan. She highlighted the agony these individuals faced during their 13-day crossing without any assistance, calling attention to the urgent need for change.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Atlantic. It is imperative that governments, organizations, and individuals work together to address the root causes of migration and provide safer, more humane alternatives for those seeking a better life.
The story raises important questions about the effectiveness of current migration policies and the need for increased cooperation between countries to address this growing crisis. As the world grapples with the complexities of migration, it is essential to prioritize the safety and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their nationality or circumstances.
In the face of such devastating loss, it is crucial that we acknowledge the humanity of those who have perished and work towards creating a more compassionate and just world for all.
