Africa's crude oil consumption patterns vary widely, with a few big economies driving the demand. According to a recent report by Global Firepower, Egypt tops the list of African countries with the highest daily crude oil consumption in 2025, using 851,000 barrels per day, ranking 26th in the world.
South Africa comes in second, consuming 601,000 barrels per day, ranked 30th globally. Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, ranks third with 515,000 barrels per day, sitting at 32nd place globally. These countries have large industries, growing cities, and busy transportation sectors that drive the oil demand.
The list also includes Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Angola, Sudan, Kenya, and Ethiopia, which make up the top 10 African countries with the highest daily crude oil consumption in 2025. These countries are major players in the oil industry, shipping out millions of barrels each year, with the revenue from these oil exports playing a significant role in developing their economies.
While crude oil consumption in Africa remains high, especially in countries with large energy demands and reliance on the petroleum sector, the continent is actively exploring renewable sources of energy. The transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources is gaining momentum as African nations recognize the need to reduce their dependency on fossil fuels and address climate change.
The shift towards renewable energy is crucial for Africa's sustainable development, and many countries are making significant strides in this direction. As the continent continues to grow and develop, it will be interesting to see how the energy landscape evolves and how African nations balance their energy needs with their commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
