In a surprising turn of events, US users of the popular short-form video app TikTok briefly migrated to Chinese app RedNote, listed in the US App Store as Xiaohongshu, in the days leading up to the anticipated TikTok ban. The app saw a massive surge in popularity, becoming the No. 1 free app in the US, with over 32.5 million daily active users on the day of the ban. However, after President Trump granted TikTok a 75-day extension, RedNote's user base rapidly declined, losing over half its daily active users in the US by Monday.
According to digital market intelligence company Similarweb, RedNote's daily active users in the US declined by 54% on Monday, following the pause in the TikTok ban enforcement. This sudden shift in user behavior was largely driven by TikTok users seeking an alternative platform to express their discontent with the ban and demonstrate their willingness to use another Chinese-owned app rather than return to Instagram's Reels feature.
Sensor Tower, an app intelligence provider, also reported a similar trend, with the average US mobile daily active users for RedNote declining by roughly 17% from January 20 to 22 compared to the previous week. The brief but intense interest in RedNote saw around 700,000 US users join the platform within two days, with daily active users reaching 3.4 million across iOS and Android in the US, a 133.8% week-over-week increase.
The cultural exchange that ensued on RedNote was notable, with users engaging in discussions about the cost of living, social credit systems, and the accuracy of US TV shows and movies. The platform became a temporary hub for cross-cultural dialogue, with users from both countries seeking to understand each other's perspectives.
However, RedNote's position as a top app in the US is unlikely to be sustainable, at least as long as TikTok remains available. The app's localization in Mandarin presented a significant language barrier, prompting many users to turn to language-learning apps like Duolingo, which saw a 216% spike in US usage. While some users may have been motivated to learn the language, the challenges of language acquisition may have deterred others.
Furthermore, RedNote's focus on the Chinese market, unlike TikTok's global appeal, may have limited its ability to retain users in the long term. TikTok's global presence was a key argument in its Supreme Court case, highlighting the importance of its international user base.
In the days leading up to the ban, TikTok's US daily active users surged to a record high for the past year, with 106.8 million users on iOS and Android engaging with the app on Sunday. The brief frenzy around RedNote serves as a testament to the strong user loyalty and engagement that TikTok has cultivated, as well as the desire for alternative platforms that can facilitate cross-cultural exchange and dialogue.
As the fate of TikTok in the US remains uncertain, the RedNote phenomenon offers valuable insights into the complexities of global social media landscapes and the evolving preferences of users. While RedNote may not have emerged as a viable long-term alternative, its brief moment in the spotlight highlights the importance of cultural understanding and language accessibility in the digital age.
