In a move that could revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) industry, UK-based custom electric car creator RBW has launched Spirit EV, a design, testing, and production company that offers EV-as-a-service with an artisan approach. This new platform will enable other companies to build custom electric cars with classic styling, leveraging RBW's expertise and knowledge gained from developing its own Roadster and GT models.
Spirit EV will provide dedicated sports and classic car builders with access to specific components or entire design outsourcing, allowing them to develop EVs with modern safety and convenience features, including Apple CarPlay. The company, which has already secured $6 million in funding from Meson Capital Partners, plans to open a factory in Danville, Virginia, by February 2025.
The launch of Spirit EV marks a significant shift in the EV industry, which has seen a decrease in component costs, making it more viable for companies to develop custom electric cars. According to Ryan Morris, president of Meson Capital Partners and chairman of RBW, Spirit EV could reach profitability with an investment of around $20 million, a relatively low barrier to entry.
This development is expected to expand the market for custom electric cars, as owners will no longer need to worry about maintenance and upkeep, making these vehicles more appealing to a wider range of consumers.
