Telo, a California-based startup, has unveiled a new preproduction prototype of its electric MT1 mini-truck, marking a significant milestone in the company's journey towards bringing its innovative vehicle to market. The latest design iteration was showcased in Los Angeles, with the company announcing that it has secured over 5,000 preorders, representing over $250 million in customer commitments.
The Telo MT1, first revealed in 2023, boasts a clever modular design that allows the truck cab to open up for more bed space or enclose like a van. The vehicle also features a unique "Monster Tunnel" storage compartment across its width, similar to Rivian's gear tunnel. The new prototype's design is nearly identical to the original reveal, with the notable exception of relocated side body indentations.
The interior of the MT1 has undergone significant changes, with LCD screens now housed in separate cut-out plates, giving the instrument cluster a more analog look. The cabin also features biodegradable cork materials, highlighting Telo's focus on sustainability. The front of the vehicle remains entirely flat, which enables its remarkably short design, making it an ideal fit for urban environments.
Despite concerns about the flat front's impact on safety, Telo has assured that it is conducting rigorous safety and durability testing to ensure the vehicle meets the highest standards. The company is targeting approval to sell the MT1 sometime next winter, with homologation expected to be achieved by then.
Telo's co-founder and CEO, Jason Marks, is calling for more investors, partners, and customers to help bring the MT1 to market. The company has assembled a team of experts, including industrial designer Yves Behar, who has worked on products for Jawbone and Herman Miller, and co-founder and CTO Forrest North, who previously founded motorcycle company Mission Motors and is leading the development of the MT1's battery technology.
The Telo MT1's compact size, with a length of just 152 inches, is a significant departure from the dominant trend of large gas-powered trucks in the US market. The Ford Maverick Hybrid, at 200 inches, is currently the smallest pickup truck available in the US, highlighting the need for more compact, environmentally friendly options like the MT1.
Reservations for the Telo MT1 are still open, with a deposit of $152 required to secure a spot. As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, Telo's innovative approach to truck design and its focus on sustainability are likely to resonate with environmentally conscious consumers.
The unveiling of the new preproduction prototype marks a significant step forward for Telo, as it works towards bringing its vision of a compact, modular electric pickup truck to market. With its unique design, focus on sustainability, and growing customer interest, the Telo MT1 is poised to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle market.
