SpaceX Takes on California Agency in Lawsuit Over Launch Proposals

In a bold move, SpaceX has filed a lawsuit against the California Coastal Commission after the agency rejected its proposal to increase launches from the state's coastline to 50 per year. The lawsuit alleges "naked political discrimination" and unlawful regulation of federal agency activities, citing the U.S. Air Force's endorsement of the plan as critical to national security.

The lawsuit raises important questions about the legal authority over launch activities on a defense base and whether commercial entities conducting launches on behalf of the Department of Defense (DoD) are subject to federal or private regulations.

In other news, Wyvern, a Canadian hyperspectral imaging startup, has raised $6 million in funding led by defense-focused VC firm Squadra Ventures to expand into the U.S. market. The company aims to access key defense programs and bid on record-breaking projects.

Meanwhile, billionaire Michael Bloomberg has criticized NASA's Artemis program, calling it a "colossal waste of taxpayer money" and suggesting that reusable SpaceX Starships could carry cargo and robots directly to the moon at a fraction of the cost.
