In a remarkable display of corporate social responsibility, numerous tech giants have come together to donate millions to aid relief efforts in Los Angeles, following the devastating wildfires that forced thousands to evacuate the region. The companies, including YouTube/Google, Meta, Snap, Amazon, Netflix, and Sony, have collectively pledged tens of millions of dollars to support immediate relief, long-term recovery, and community rebuilding efforts.
YouTube and Google have committed a substantial $15 million to organizations providing immediate relief in LA, including the Emergency Network Los Angeles, the American Red Cross, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, and the Institute for Nonprofit News. The companies also plan to offer YouTube production facilities to impacted creators and artists to help them rebuild their businesses once it's safe to reopen their offices in LA. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan emphasized the importance of supporting the community, stating that "Los Angeles is the heart of entertainment and storytelling and has an impact on culture all over the world."
Meta has pledged $2 million in cash and advertising credits to support relief activities, with Mark and Priscilla Zuckerberg personally donating an additional $2 million. The company's donations will focus on providing immediate shelter, medical humanitarian aid, and long-term recovery efforts. Meta has also activated Facebook's Safety Check feature, which has enabled over 400,000 users to notify their friends and family that they are safe.
Snap has donated $5 million in immediate relief and plans to do more, with CEO Evan Spiegel announcing that the company will provide meals to evacuees and first responders, as well as offer free space. Spiegel, who grew up in the Palisades and lost his father's house in the wildfires, expressed his love for Los Angeles, stating that "we will use our strength, our ingenuity, and our love to create again and anew."
Amazon has committed $10 million to relief organizations in LA, including the American Red Cross of Southern California, FireAid, MusiCares Fire Relief Effort, World Central Kitchen, Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, Habitat for Los Angeles Wildfire Fund, and Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Small Business Relief/Recovery Fund. The company has also donated over 145,000 essential items to 17 local organizations working on the wildfire response and deployed cloud technology to assist emergency responders.
Netflix has donated $10 million to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, California Community Fund Wildfire Recovery Fund, World Central Kitchen, Motion Picture and Television Fund, and Entertainment Community Fund. The streaming giant is also assisting its impacted employees, including helping with temporary housing needs for those who lost their homes. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos emphasized the importance of rebuilding, stating that "the next few years will be a rebuilding time for many of us and it will require creativity, vision, grit, and perseverance."
Apple, although not disclosing the exact amount, has also pledged to support the victims and recovery efforts on the ground. The company has added a way for users to easily donate to the American Red Cross through its App Store and Apple Music apps. Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed his sympathy, stating that "our hearts go out to all impacted by the ongoing devastation in LA."
Sony has donated $5 million to support emergency relief in LA, with the donation allocated to relief organizations supporting first responders, community relief, rebuilding efforts, and employee assistance programs. Sony's CEO Kenichiro Yoshida and President Hiroki Totoki emphasized the company's deep roots in the LA community, stating that "we will continue to work with our local business leadership to determine how best Sony Group can support relief and recovery efforts in the days ahead."
Beyond the tech industry, major entertainment companies have also donated millions to aid relief efforts. Warner Bros. Discovery has committed $15 million, Comcast NBCUniversal has donated $10 million, The Walt Disney Company has pledged $15 million, and Paramount is donating $1 million. The collective efforts of these companies demonstrate a remarkable commitment to supporting the people of Los Angeles during this difficult time.
