Stability AI Partners with Arm to Bring AI-Generated Audio to Mobile Devices

Stability AI, a pioneering AI startup, has announced a significant partnership with chipmaker Arm to bring its Stable Audio Open model to mobile devices. This collaboration will enable the generation of audio, including sound effects, on mobile devices running Arm chips, marking a major breakthrough in AI-powered audio creation.

The Stable Audio Open model, which can generate audio from text descriptions, is a game-changer in the audio generation space. Unlike other AI-powered apps that rely on cloud processing, Stable Audio Open can operate offline, making it a more versatile and user-friendly solution. Moreover, Stability AI's training set is comprised entirely of royalty-free audio and songs, mitigating IP risks associated with copyrighted content.

The optimized Stable Audio Open model, which will be demoed at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona, has been "distilled" to run efficiently on Arm chips. This optimization has resulted in a 30x speedup in generation times, with a single 11-second audio sample taking around 8 seconds to generate on an Armv9 CPU. While the optimized model is not yet available for download, Stability AI CEO Prem Akkaraju hinted at plans to bring the model to consumer apps and devices in the future.

Akkaraju emphasized the importance of making generative AI models accessible to a broader range of users, stating, "As more and more professional creatives and businesses adopt generative AI to power their production pipeline, it's important that our models and workflows are available everywhere for builders to build and creators to create." The partnership with Arm is a key step towards achieving this goal.

Stability AI has been working to revamp its operations after a tumultuous period, during which the company faced financial difficulties and staff resignations. Under new leadership, the company has made significant strides, including hiring a new CEO, appointing Titanic director James Cameron to its board of directors, and releasing several new image generation models.

The collaboration with Arm marks a significant milestone in Stability AI's turnaround, and the implications of this partnership are far-reaching. As AI-generated audio becomes more accessible and user-friendly, we can expect to see a proliferation of innovative applications across various industries, from entertainment and advertising to education and healthcare.

As the AI landscape continues to evolve, partnerships like the one between Stability AI and Arm will play a crucial role in shaping the future of generative AI. With the optimized Stable Audio Open model poised to revolutionize audio generation, it will be exciting to see how this technology is leveraged to create new and innovative experiences.
