Google has officially rolled out support for Spotify on its Gemini AI assistant, enabling users to search and play music from the popular streaming service using natural language requests. This integration marks a significant milestone in the development of Gemini, which was first spotted in the code of the Google app in June.
The Spotify extension allows users to find and play music using song titles, artist names, album names, playlist names, or even for a particular activity. However, it's worth noting that Gemini currently doesn't support creating playlists or radio stations on Spotify. Additionally, users who have already linked another music service like YouTube Music will need to specify which service they want Gemini to use in their initial request, and the AI assistant will default to the last-used service thereafter.
To enable the Spotify extension, users need to link their Spotify and Google accounts and enable Gemini Apps Activity, which can store AI queries for up to 72 hours. However, there are some limitations to the integration – it only works on compatible Android devices, and the language setting must be set to English. Furthermore, the extension is not available on Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the Gemini app on iOS devices.
This development marks the second non-Google app to gain Gemini abilities, following the rollout of WhatsApp support in October. The integration is a significant step forward in Google's efforts to expand the capabilities of its AI assistant, which is poised to revolutionize the way users interact with their devices.
The implications of this integration are far-reaching, as it enables users to access a vast library of music using simple voice commands or typed requests. This could lead to increased adoption of Gemini and further cement Google's position in the AI assistant market. Moreover, the integration sets a precedent for future collaborations between Google and other popular services, potentially paving the way for a more seamless and interconnected user experience.
As the technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Google expands the capabilities of Gemini and which other services will be integrated in the future. For now, Spotify users on Android devices can start exploring the possibilities of Gemini-powered music control.
