SpaceX is gearing up for a major milestone in its Starship test flight program, with the next launch expected to demonstrate payload deployment for the first time. This significant step forward will see the company deploy 10 Starlink "simulators" into space, paving the way for the operational version of these satellites to become the first real payloads carried by Starship.
The Starlink simulators, similar in size and weight to the next-generation satellites SpaceX plans to deploy, will travel on the same trajectory as the upper stage of the Starship rocket and splash down in the Indian Ocean. This test will provide crucial insights into the payload deployment capabilities of the Starship, which is designed to revolutionize satellite constellation deployment.
The operational version of these satellites, known as V3, is expected to be the first real payload carried by Starship. However, the next-generation V3 satellites are expected to be much heavier than the current V2 Mini spacecraft, making Starship's incredible payload capacity a game-changer.
With Starship, SpaceX plans to deploy 60 V3 satellites per launch, adding 60 terabits per second of capacity to the Starlink network. This represents a significant increase in capacity, with each V3 satellite offering more than 10 times the downlink and 24 times the uplink capacity compared to the V2 Mini satellites.
In addition to the payload deployment test, SpaceX is also introducing a range of upgrades to the Starship rocket. The company will also attempt to "catch" the Super Heavy booster, a feat it accomplished for the first time during the fifth test in October.
