South Korean startup RLWRLD has emerged from stealth mode with a groundbreaking AI-powered robotics foundation model, securing $14.8 million in seed funding from prominent investors. The company's innovative approach combines large language models with traditional robotics software, enabling robots to perform precise tasks, handle delicate materials, and adjust to changing conditions.
The need for such a solution is evident, as industrial robots, which excel at repetitive tasks, struggle with tasks that require precision, dexterity, and adaptability. This limitation has led to many industrial processes remaining manual. RLWRLD's foundation model aims to bridge this gap, allowing robots to learn and replicate human expertise, thereby increasing efficiency in work environments.
The startup's founder and CEO, Jung-Hee Ryu, emphasized the significance of this development, stating that RLWRLD's model will enable the automation of processes that currently require manual work. Ryu, a seasoned entrepreneur with a successful exit under his belt, has assembled a team of six professors from top-ranked South Korean institutions, including KAIST, SNU, and POSTECH, to drive the development of RLWRLD's robotics foundation model.
The seed funding round, led by Hashed, with participation from Mirae Asset Venture Investment and Global Brain, will be utilized to fund proof-of-concept projects with strategic investors, secure computing infrastructure, and hire top research talent. Notably, RLWRLD has attracted a long list of big strategic investors, including Ana Group, PKSHA, Mitsui Chemical, Shimadzu, and KDDI from Japan, as well as LG Electronics and SK Telecom from Korea, and Amber Manufacturing from India.
Ryu highlighted the importance of these strategic partnerships, which will facilitate the collection of valuable data from manufacturing sites and enable the development of advanced hand movements involving five-fingers, a capability that sets RLWRLD apart from its competitors. The company is also working on a humanoid-based autonomous action demonstration, scheduled for later this year, and a platform that can support various types of robots, including industrial, collaborative, autonomous mobile robots, and humanoids.
RLWRLD's long-term vision is to cater to factories, logistics centers, retail stores, and even domestic environments, with the initial focus on targeting industrials, which are willing to pay a premium for automation solutions. The startup aims to generate revenue as early as this year through proof-of-concept projects and collaboration demonstrations with strategic partners.
The robotics industry has been rapidly advancing, with over 540,000 new industrial robots installed worldwide in 2023, taking the total number of active industrial robots to above 4 million, according to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). RLWRLD's innovative approach is poised to revolutionize the industry, enabling robots to perform tasks that were previously deemed too complex or delicate.
In a crowded market with competitors like Skild AI, Physical Intelligence, Tesla, Google DeepMind, and Nvidia, RLWRLD's unique approach, combined with its strategic partnerships and access to valuable data, positions the startup for success. As the robotics industry continues to evolve, RLWRLD's AI-powered robotics foundation model is set to play a significant role in shaping the future of automation.
