Sony to Bring Crisper Graphics to PS5 Pro with AMD's FSR 4 Upscaler

Sony has revealed its plans to bring even crisper graphics to the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) by incorporating AMD's FSR 4 upscaling technology into its games. This move is expected to take the console's visual capabilities to the next level, starting with 2026 titles.

Currently, the PS5 Pro is capable of producing sharper and more stable graphics than its predecessor, but Sony aims to further enhance this experience with the implementation of FSR 4. This AI-powered upscaling formula, which is already available on AMD's RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards, has been shown to be competitive with Nvidia's DLSS technology.

According to PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny, the company is working on a "reimplementation" of FSR 4's upscaler, which will be available on PS5 Pro for 2026 titles. This move marks the next evolution of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), an AI upscaler that is already used in many new PS5 Pro games. PSSR can upscale 720p images to 4K resolution in real-time, while also adding extra particle effects, and has received positive reviews for its quality.

The collaboration between Sony and AMD on FSR 4 is part of a larger partnership called Project Amethyst, which was announced in December. Cerny revealed that the neural network and training recipe used in FSR 4's upscaler were the first results of this collaboration, and that Sony plans to "backport" some of this work to its flagship console.

While developers are still encouraged to use PSSR for the time being, Cerny hinted that Sony will have its own implementations of each algorithm it develops with AMD moving forward. He also suggested that Project Amethyst may have broader implications beyond gaming consoles, stating that the technology has uses beyond PlayStation and is about supporting machine learning across a variety of devices.

The implementation of FSR 4 on PS5 Pro is expected to have a significant impact on the gaming industry, as it will provide developers with even more powerful tools to create visually stunning games. With the console war heating up, this move is likely to give Sony a competitive edge in the market.

For gamers, this means that they can expect even more immersive and visually impressive experiences on their PS5 Pro consoles starting in 2026. With the continued advancements in AI-powered upscaling technology, the future of gaming is looking brighter than ever.
