Slip Robotics Revolutionizes Logistics with Autonomous Floor-Bots, Raises $28M in Series B Funding

Imagine a scenario where forklifts buzzing around a loading dock, maneuvering in and out of truck trailers, can be replaced by autonomous robots that can load a trailer in just five minutes. This is the vision of Atlanta-based startup Slip Robotics, which has developed a revolutionary robot-as-a-service business that combines automation software and large floor-like robotic platforms to transform the logistics industry.

The founders of Slip Robotics, Chris Smith, Dennis Siedlak, and John Jakomin, drew inspiration from the humble floor to create their innovative solution. The company's SlipBots can hold 10 palettes and carry up to 12,000 pounds, navigating uneven ground and routes from the warehouse floor into a truck trailer. Three SlipBots can fit into one truck trailer, and once the truck arrives at its destination, the SlipBots disembark, streamlining the logistics process.

The idea behind SlipBots was born out of Chris Smith's collective experience at former employers Cummins, Tesla, and Volley Automation. His time at Tesla, where he led factory simulation and analytics, was particularly influential in shaping his vision for autonomous logistics. Smith's thought-provoking question, "What if I built the floor, but it moves?" led to the development of SlipBots, which can move entire pallets of freight at once, eliminating the need for forklifts.

After three years of development and testing, Slip Robotics launched its commercial service in 2023. Today, the company has hundreds of SlipBots in operation across more than 25 sites, ranging from 20,000 square feet to over 2 million square feet in size. Its impressive customer roster includes John Deere, GE Appliances, Valeo, and Nissan. Customers pay a subscription license fee for the use of SlipBots, which includes ongoing software updates, hardware service, maintenance, and repairs.

Slip Robotics' innovative approach has attracted significant investor interest. The company has just closed a $28 million Series B funding round, led by DCVC and participated in by existing investors Eve Atlas, Tech Square Ventures, Hyde Park Venture Partners, Overline, and Pathbreaker Ventures. This brings the total funding raised by Slip Robotics to $45 million. The new capital will be used to hire more employees, increase deployments, and enhance its product offerings.

According to Chief Commercial Officer Jordan Sanders, Slip Robotics' success is a testament to its focused approach to scaling. "People have come to expect a lot of hype and 'smoke and mirrors' from robotics companies about their actual state of technology development and actual commercial scale," Sanders noted. "This expectation and implicit skepticism is unfortunate, but it is entirely justified based on the hype and failed promises over the last decade." By keeping a low profile and focusing on developing its robotics platform, Slip Robotics has been able to deliver on its promises, growing from a team of less than a dozen to around 50 employees today.

The implications of Slip Robotics' technology are far-reaching, with the potential to transform the logistics industry by increasing efficiency, reducing costs, and improving safety. As the company continues to expand its operations and deploy more SlipBots, it will be interesting to see how this innovative solution shapes the future of logistics.
