Skich Launches as Latest Alternative iOS App Store in Europe, Focusing on Mobile Gamers

The European Union has witnessed the launch of another alternative iOS app store, Skich, which specifically caters to mobile gamers. This development comes on the heels of the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which has led to a relaxation of Apple's App Store restrictions. Skich joins the likes of AltStore Pal, SetApp Mobile, and Mobivention in the growing list of alternative app marketplaces.

Skich Store is now available for download in the EU for iOS devices via its official website, with an Android version currently in development. The platform promises to offer a more personalized experience in terms of game discovery and distribution compared to other alternative app stores. However, it's worth noting that Skich has launched with no games available, a stark contrast to Aptoide, another gaming-focused third-party iOS app store, which had eight basic titles at its launch last June.

Skich CEO Sergey Budkovski has assured that games will start appearing on the platform in March, with around 20 developers having expressed interest so far. The platform's algorithm, powered by 240 genres, aims to provide a Tinder-like recommendation system that perfectly matches gamers with games, a significant improvement over the App Store's offerings.

In terms of revenue, Skich will apply a 15 percent fee to developers for every purchase made on the platform, including in-app purchases from games downloaded through it. This is a more competitive rate compared to Apple's 20 percent fee for EU developers.

Skich's launch is notable, given the limited number of third-party app stores that have emerged since the DMA came into force in March last year. While the platform's empty roster of gaming titles may raise some eyebrows, it will be interesting to see if Skich can deliver on its promise of providing more optimized recommendations once it rectifies the issue.

The launch of Skich also highlights the ongoing shift in the app store landscape, with alternative platforms vying for a share of the market. As the EU continues to promote competition and innovation in the digital space, it will be fascinating to observe how Skich and other alternative app stores evolve and adapt to meet the changing needs of mobile gamers.

With its focus on mobile gamers and promise of a personalized experience, Skich has the potential to carve out a niche for itself in the EU market. However, it remains to be seen whether the platform can successfully execute its vision and attract a significant user base.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, one thing is certain – the emergence of alternative app stores like Skich will continue to shape the future of mobile gaming and beyond.
